Esch-sur-Alzette is going for cargo bikes

With technical support from the ACL

The country’s second-largest city is bringing in cargo bikes to help local businesses move stuff around in an eco-friendly way. The ACL is backing the project.

On 20 May 2025, the city of Esch-sur-Alzette launched its new sustainability project called ‘Cargo Bike’ on the Place de la Résistance. This initiative, supported by the European Union as part of its Intelligent Cities Challenge programme, is a significant milestone in the ecological transformation of Luxembourg’s second-largest city.

Free service for businesses

At the heart of the project is the provision of cargo bikes free of charge to local businesses. Based on the model of the Vël’OH public bikes, the electric cargo bikes will enable goods to be transported quickly and without CO2 emissions. This pursues two objectives. On the one hand, it aims to reduce the CO2 footprint of commercial activities and, on the other, to reduce car traffic.

‘This project is a concrete response to the challenges of urban logistics,’ explained Meris Sehovic, member of parliament and alderman responsible for the city’s economic development, in the press, adding: ‘It’s about supporting our businesses and improving the quality of life for our residents.’

The ACL – more than just a breakdown service

The project was developed after the Automobile Club Luxembourg (ACL) brought its partner Moovee, which specialises in shared mobility, together with the city of Esch-sur-Alzette. The ACL will provide technical support for the cargo bikes. This collaboration illustrates the desire of public and private actors to work together to promote more responsible mobility.

“It’s very interesting to see what can be achieved when the right partners come together. The implementation of the “Cargo Bike” project in Esch is fully in line with our commitment to modern, sustainable and inclusive mobility,” emphasises Miriam Eisenmenger, CEO of the ACL. The club, which represents over 191,000 members, has positioned itself as a promoter of projects and enables municipalities to implement concrete mobility projects.
