Advice for all road users
As every year, the start of the school term goes hand in hand with increased road safety awareness. With thousands of pupils heading back to school, extra caution is required, especially around school areas.
This year, classes will resume on Monday, 15 September. Increased traffic is therefore to be expected, and all road users are urged to pay particular attention, as many children will be on their way to school.
To ensure a safe start to the school year, here are some key tips:
For parents:
- Walk the school route with your child and point out possible dangers.
- Choose the safest route, even if it is longer.
- Set a good example: children copy adult behaviour.
- Always respect traffic regulations, even for short trips.
- Make sure your child always gets out on the pavement side, never on the side of the road.
- Do not wait on the opposite side of the street.
- Ensure your child is visible: light-coloured clothing, reflective vests, stickers, or armbands.
- If using a bicycle or trailer, ensure visibility and wear a helmet.
For kids:
- Walk on the pavement, on the side of the houses.
- Cross only at pedestrian crossings or green lights, and always look both ways first.
- Watch out for cars exiting garages or hidden behind parked vehicles.
For drivers:
- Be extra cautious near schools and bus stops.
- Adjust your speed and be ready to brake at any time.
- Remember that children do not always perceive road dangers.
- Keep a safe distance from cyclists and give them enough space.
The police are on board
As every year, the Grand Ducal Police will be particularly present around schools at the start of term. Their mission: to support teachers and parents while carrying out targeted checks. Offences such as speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, or dangerous manoeuvres will be under close scrutiny.
As part of its awareness and prevention efforts, the Police will also continue distributing free safety vests to all pupils in cycle 2.1 of primary school. A concrete action to improve children’s visibility on their way to school and to remind everyone that they are vulnerable road users.
Back to school is a moment of joy and reunion, but it must also be marked by caution and vigilance. By combining the efforts of authorities, parents and drivers, we can make this time of year a safe and serene experience for all children.
Three ACL initiatives for a safe return to school
In addition to its practical advice, the ACL is launching several actions to raise awareness and protect young people on their way to school:
A free child safety vest with every purchase in the ACL shops in Bertrange and Ingeldorf, while stocks last, from 10 to 19 September.
Back to School on Wednesday, 10 September, at the Mondercange karting track in collaboration with the FSCL – a practical and theoretical workshop on cycling to school for children up to 12 years old.
A save Start to the Schoolyear from 11 to 13 September at the Cloche d’Or shopping centre – a family-friendly event with creative workshops, balance bike course, prize wheel and discussions on mobility and road safety.
The entire ACL team wishes everyone an excellent and happy start to the school year!
